Growing medicinal cannabis with LED lighting: research and tips for better yields

Cultivating medicinal cannabis requires optimal growing conditions. Recent research from Wageningen University & Research shows that LED grow lights , along with IR and UV light, play a key role in producing high-quality, consistent flowers. By applying the correct light intensity , wavelengths , and temperature , growers can increase yields and utilize energy more efficiently.

Research into light and medicinal cannabis

Mexx Holweg , who recently received his PhD from Wageningen University, conducted extensive research into how different types of light influence plant structure , root development and chemical composition of cannabis flowers.
His study compared LED and UV light to discover how they affect the production of active ingredients. The findings are particularly important for medicinal growers, where quality and consistency are paramount.

Why LED and UV light are so important in cannabis cultivation

  • LED grow lights consume less energy and provide a focused light spectrum, which is ideal for the flowering phase.

  • UV light can stimulate the production of certain active substances, such as cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • IR light is used by plants to determine the length of day and night, which has a major influence on flowering.

  • Combining LED with UV and IR can lead to higher concentrations of active ingredients, if dosed correctly.

Photobiology: The Effect of Light on Cannabis Growth

Holweg focused on photobiology , or the influence of light on plant growth. He examined not only the amount of light , but also its color and wavelengths .
In an experiment, he gave plants extra light, hoping that the lower flowers would also produce more active ingredients. The result: the plants preferred to invest the extra energy in leaf, stem, and total flowering growth. Yield increased slightly, but the distribution of ingredients between the upper and lower flowers remained uneven.

Cultivation optimization for medicinal cannabis

The research shows that several factors determine the end result:

  • Temperature control for optimal plant development

  • Watering and CO₂ administration at the right time

  • Light intensity and spectrum tailored to the growth and flowering phase

  • Timing of harvest to achieve the highest concentration of active ingredients

By fine-tuning these variables, a grower can:
Grow higher quality flowers
✅ Achieve more consistent results
Reduce energy consumption
Getting the most out of LED technology

Future of lighting in cannabis cultivation

After completing his PhD, Holweg will work for a manufacturer of lighting fixtures for vegetable, ornamental, and cannabis cultivation. His expertise will contribute to new innovations in energy-efficient grow lights and advanced lighting control .

In the NRC, Holweg talks about his research:
