Urban farming, growing food in the city, is an emerging topic. Development is in full swing and it is expected to play a major role in the future. In Tokyo, it is already happening a lot, where some 700,000 people live off crops grown in the city.
Student develops LED grow box
A former student at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Toon Roozen, followed a research program 'CleanTech' in his final year. The big goal was to bring urban farming to the consumer. Together with international horticultural company, Koppert Cress, he developed a cabinet equipped with LED grow lights to grow sprouts in.

The former student then went a step further. A new cabinet became smaller and also more user-friendly. The growing cabinet is ideal for the office, to make consumers more aware of food and the origin of food. A caterer for companies, Appél, will soon be using the growing cabinet at no fewer than ten locations.
