Philips has announced in a statement that vegetables no longer have to be planted in the open ground. In addition, they no longer need much space to grow. By using LED lighting, it would also be perfectly possible to grow vegetables, which could offer an interesting solution for vegetable cultivation in urban areas.
Growing vegetables in layers
By using the possibilities that LED lights have to offer, it is possible to grow vegetables in layers. This means that a lot of space can be saved and that no longer works in width, but in height. By using special light recipes, it can also be ensured that the lights are specifically adjusted to the type of vegetable, which guarantees optimal growth.
Revolution in vegetable growing
According to Philips CEO Frans van Houten, there is nothing less than a revolution in vegetable cultivation today. He states that if city farming were to be done in 20 buildings, the entire city of New York could easily be supplied with fresh vegetables. Various Philips partner companies are already using the possibilities of LED lighting to grow vegetables. However, after a certain period, they are still grown in the traditional way in greenhouses. Vegetables grown in this way are already finding their way to the shops.
