LED lighting has become an indispensable part of our society. This lighting is not only very energy-efficient, but also lasts a lot longer than traditional incandescent or halogen lamps. Although LED lighting is a bit more expensive to purchase than one of these traditional lamps, you can count on a longer lifespan. An LED lamp lasts 8 to 10 times longer than a halogen lamp. So you will earn back the investment over time. In addition, LED lighting has a number of other advantages for your growing space.

The benefits of LED lighting

As you have read, LED lighting is a lot more economical compared to other lamps. But LED is not only suitable for lighting different (living) spaces, you also create the right conditions with LED lighting to grow different crops indoors.

The advantages of LED lighting at a glance:

  • No ultraviolet radiation
Just like with people, UV radiation is harmful to plants. Plants do have a mechanism to block this radiation, but if they are continuously exposed to UV light, this has a negative effect on growth. For example, plants that are always exposed to ultraviolet radiation flower much less.
  • No mercury
You don't notice it, but TL light and even energy-saving lamps contain mercury. There is also a certain (but minimal) emission of mercury during use of the lighting. When the lamp is damaged, it is therefore necessary to replace it as soon as possible. LED lighting, on the other hand, does not contain mercury.
  • Stronger than traditional lamp
LED lighting is a lot more robust compared to a fluorescent tube, for example. LED is shockproof.
  • Available in various colours, types and sizes
LED lighting is available in different versions, such as lamps and strips. In addition, you can choose from a number of colours, such as blue, white and two-colour LEDs. There are also different types of LED grow lighting available, more about this later.
  • LED lighting is much less warm
Traditional lamps can become very warm or even overheat after a while. You will also feel a very hot radiation with these lamps. With LED lighting, this works slightly differently. Everything is controlled via electronics, that is where you will feel the most heat.
  • Direct light
With a fluorescent tube you will have to wait a while before you have full light. With LED lighting you do not have to take into account a 'warm-up period'. Here you have full light immediately.
  • Long lifespan
As we described earlier in this article, LED lighting has a much longer lifespan than a traditional lamp. With LED, an average of 50,000 burning hours are possible.
  • Thrifty
An energy-saving lamp is economical, but LED lighting is even more economical. LED uses only half the electricity compared to an energy-saving lamp.
  • Easy to connect
Most of the LED grow lights in our range can be connected very easily, with the plug in the socket. This is quite an improvement compared to the traditional HPS lamps, in addition you often still need accessories to connect the lamp, which is usually not the case with LED lighting for growing.

The 'right climate', what exactly is it?

When you start growing with LED lighting, you will often hear about growing in the 'right climate'. But what does that actually mean? In this case, it means that you have to take into account the power of the lighting, how you adjust it (so how close you can place the lighting to the plant) and the required nutrition of your crops. This can again differ per type. LED lighting is the replacement for sunlight, so make sure that you do not give your plants too much light. Switching off the light occasionally can be fine, the lighting schedule depends on the type of plants you are growing.

The same goes for nutrition. When you grow with LED lighting, your plants generally need a lot less water and nutrition. The big danger lies in the fact that many people then give too much nutrition. The best way to check whether it is time for extra nutrients is to look at the leaves of the crops every day. Are they brown or are the plants drooping? Then it is time for extra nutrition. Read up on it and with the right growing lighting it is possible to grow the most beautiful plants even in your kitchen.

Types of LED Grow Lights

LED grow lights are available in a number of different versions. To see which type of lighting you need, it is always wise to look at the specifications per lamp. For example, what power do the plants need to grow? And what type of light do you need (cool color or warm color)? To help you get started in the field of LED grow lights , we have listed a number of types for you.

  • Comics
The LED strips are ideal for growing plants in a smaller space. This lighting is especially suitable for growing cuttings and mothers. The strips are available in different lengths, with wattages from 8 to 16 watts. The big advantage of LED strips is that they hardly get warm, which makes it possible to place the lighting closer to the plants.
  • UFOs
Are you looking for LED lighting with a higher wattage? Then a UFO is a good option. You can easily connect it to the power grid via a socket. With more than 50,000 burning hours, these UFOs are the right lighting for the start-up growth phase of your plants and cuttings.
  • Spectrabox
Spectrabox is now a household name in the (LED) growing world. With the new Spectrabox BB series you get all the good things an LED growing light should have in your home; energy-efficient, sustainable, waterproof and 100% silent! The prices of this lighting are slightly higher than the UFOs and LED strips, but that also applies to the quality, what a top lamp!
  • Growth spots
You can easily create the right climate in your greenhouse with the grow spots. These ensure that your plants do not get too hot. The spots contain white light, so you are not bothered by the bright colours of the lamp when you grow the plants indoors. Grow spots are ideal for use in small spaces and have a standard fitting.
