Light is one of the most important factors in growing plants. It is therefore essential that you choose the right grow lights for your grow space. Below you can read which grow lights are suitable for hobby growers and small grow spaces.
The most obvious choices are HPS grow lights , LED grow lights or energy saving lamps (TL or T5).
HPS grow lights
According to many growers, the HPS grow light still performs best. This lamp is also very affordable. This lamp is very suitable for the flowering phase of plants because of its red color. An HPS grow light always needs a ballast. These are also available in dimmable and digital versions. These versions are a bit more expensive, but also a lot safer than analog versions. In addition, they do not get hot and are less likely to break.
HPS grow lights are available from 150 to 1150 watts. However, a hobby grower needs a lamp of maximum 400 watts.
HPS grow lights produce a lot of heat. That is why you need to hang these lights far enough away from your plants. You calculate this distance by taking at least 10 percent of the wattage in centimeters. If you grow with HPS grow lights, you need enough vertical space.
Led grow lights
LED lights are a lot safer to use: they use less energy, which means they get less hot than HPS lights and your plants burn less quickly. In addition, LED grow lights are easier to connect, since you don't need a ballast. In addition, LED lights last much longer than HPS lights.
Are you willing to invest a little more in your grow lights and are you going for the best results? Then LED grow lights are the best choice for you.
Fluorescent grow lights
There are many different types of fluorescent lights, including energy-saving bulbs, T-Neon grow lights, and fluorescent tubes. This grow light is best suited for young seed plants and cuttings. With the right light color, flowering is also possible.
The light from these grow lights does not radiate far, so these lights have to be hung close to the plants. This is not a problem, as these lights hardly produce any heat.
Choose color 865 or 840 for growth, and 827 or 830 for flowering. These color codes are usually found on the packaging of the lamp.
Do you have a low grow space (like a grow box) and a small budget? Then fluorescent grow lights are for you.
