What is the best grow light for hobby growers? And compare between the most common lamps!

Light is one of the most important factors in growing plants. It is therefore very important to choose the right grow lights for a grow room. Below you can read which grow lights are suitable for hobby growers and small grow rooms.

The most obvious choices are High Pressure Grow Lights, LED Grow Lights or Energy Saving Lights (TL or T5). What are their pros and cons?

  1. LED Lamps:

    • Advantages: LED lights are energy efficient, have a long lifespan, and offer the possibility to adjust the light spectrum to the growth phase of plants. They also produce less heat, which makes it easier to control the temperature in the grow room.
    • Disadvantages: Initially more expensive to purchase than other types of lamps. Quality can vary depending on brand and model.

  2. HPS Lamps:

    • Advantages: HPS lamps have a high light output per watt and are effective for the flowering phase of plants due to their spectrum that is rich in red light.
    • Disadvantages: They generate a lot of heat and consume more energy compared to LED lamps. Their lifespan is shorter than that of LEDs.

  3. CMH Lamps:

    • Advantages: CMH lamps provide a broad spectrum similar to natural sunlight, including UV rays that are beneficial for plant growth. They are more energy efficient and have a longer lifespan than HPS lamps.
    • Disadvantages: They are more expensive to purchase than HPS lamps and can be less efficient in terms of light output per watt than LEDs.

  4. Fluorescent Lamps:

    • Advantages: Fluorescent lights are inexpensive to purchase and can be used for seedlings and young plants because of their low heat output and broad spectrum.
    • Disadvantages: They have a lower light output per watt compared to LEDs, HPS and CMH lamps. They are less suitable for the flowering phase because of the limited red and blue spectrum.

The best choice for the hobby grower:

  • LED lights are generally considered the best choice for hobby growers due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, spectrum adjustability, and ability to reduce heat. While the initial cost is higher, they often offer the best value in the long run due to lower energy costs and less need for replacement.

  • HPS and CMH lamps are also very suitable, especially for specific needs such as flowering plants where red light is essential. They are often used by experienced growers who are familiar with their properties and can manage the extra heat control.

  • Fluorescent bulbs are more suitable for beginners or for growing seedlings and young plants because of their lower cost and limited light intensity. Choose color code 865 or 840 for growth, and 827 or 830 for flowering. These color codes are often found on the packaging of the bulb.

The best type of grow light depends on your specific needs, budget, and growing experience.
